Special guest:
"For more than four decades I’ve worked as a journalist, columnist and daily newspaper editor, as well as writing and publishing books on American Civil War history – and most recently books on the paranormal from the perspective of a veteran journalist. About a year ago I retired from the newspaper to work full time as an author and publisher, although I still write my weekly On My Mind newspaper column.
Before tackling the paranormal, as a journalist I’ve written stories ranging from compelling human interest pieces to historical features, and covered hard news events such as murders and political wrongdoing. For decades I was in charge of the news room of a daily paper.
The paranormal is a topic that found me, rather than me finding it, and I have become an author and lecturer on the paranormal. Let me explain.
Although I consider myself a spiritual person, for most of my life I have been a die hard skeptic when it came to the paranormal. I did not even believe my grandmother, a southern Baptist minister’s wife, when she told me about living in a haunted house in Louisiana – I thought perhaps she had eaten too much spicy Cajun food before going to bed. I became more open minded, however, after my wife and I purchased an 1830’s house in Ohio, which turned out to be quite haunted.
For a time we thought we were losing our minds, as we would hear footsteps when nobody was there, radios would turn off and on by themselves and change stations on their own, tools would come up missing and show up in unlikely places, we would hear disembodied voices, and batteries would drain inexplicably, among other occurrences. The former resident of the home had told us it was haunted, and my reaction to him had been to bite my tongue to keep from saying that explained the half empty booze bottles we kept finding around the house.
As a daily newspaper editor I was used to uncovering the straight facts, and these mysteries were nothing short of mind boggling. We started to research our paranormal occurrences, and learned they are quite common. We had further paranormal encounters at the iconic Civil War battlefield of Gettysburg. At the urging of my wife and co-workers I reluctantly wrote a book about my experiences, “I Met a Ghost at Gettysburg: A Journalist’s Journey Into the Paranormal.” I thought that would be a once-and-done book topic, but that did not prove to be the case.
“I Met a Ghost at Gettysburg” opened unexpected and incredible doors for me. I have been invited by leading paranormal researchers to take part in investigations of haunted sites, been booked as a speaker at many paranormal conferences and events, been interviewed on countless radio shows and podcasts and even been interviewed on television, including a widely distributed PBS show and most recently as a source for the Travel Channel’s “Most Terrifying Places.”
Recently I came out with my second book on the paranormal, “I Met More Ghosts at Gettysburg: A Journalist’s Paranormal Journey Continues.”
I still remain a skeptic, and I love to debunk hauntings, but there are many, many occurrences that happen to many, many people that simply cannot be dismissed.
Although this is an usual topic to say the least, I have found it is one people do find fascinating. I know I certainly do, and I very much enjoy helping to open people’s minds."
